Amazon.com Review
"Good news isn't an escape from reality; it's the best way to improve reality," writes author-editor Gail Bernice Holland. In A Call for Connection, Holland reports on a pervasive global movement dedicated to spiritual growth and holistic concern for all life. What makes this book stand out amidst so much of the new paradigm blather is Holland's thorough reporting. She speaks with big-name leaders--such as Jane Goodall and Archbishop Desmond Tutu--as well as everyday leaders of institutes, schools, and environmental groups. Ultimately, we find proof of a worldwide network connected by the same principles: bridging spirituality and science, saving the earth through respecting the interconnectedness of life, and creating a work life that honors the home life. Holland pulls all the pieces together by providing a massive list of names and contacts for those who are no doubt inspired to join the movement. --Gail Hudson

Despite the discouraging pessimism broadcast from daily news and the dark picture that mass media paints of the sad state of humanity, this book brings to light that the world as a whole just might be headed in the right direction after all. As I read the book I got very excited. The author identifies as a trend what we all see happening around us in our very own social circles, schools, communities, no matter what country we might be in. The discussion of the "whole new culture" helps readers realize that there is not just a lonesome handful of people who have vision and are trying to make a difference in the world, but rather that there is a definite trend of large numbers of people who emphasize heart, compassion, spirit imagination. These people are actually manifesting their ideals through personal and group(NGO and nonprofit) efforts. Contrary to the cynics of any time, being an idealist is no longer impractical! This is made evident by actual cases and examples. The concept is further strengthened as you find parallels in your own observations of the world around you. Be inspired and encouraged to let your own visions of a better world lead you on to take action in your own way.

For those who laugh at Dilbert's view of corporate America but secretly despair in it's truths, this book is a ray of sunshine, showing what is possible when our intention is to combine living our values with deep commitment to others and our planet, to create meaningful work. It is truly awe inspiring to realize what is possible when connecting with others in the spirit of love, integrity, shared dreams, and an intention to do good. Gail's work is very timely and necessary.

With a media machine that thrives on feeding us simplistic news with shock value, Ms. Holland's book provides a much needed alternate view. If she is correct, the real shock is that the many positive and healthy responses to social change she documents may in fact overpower the negative ones in the daily news. She culls information from all aspects of culture that generate social change, then ties her examples together with a holistic, life-supporting vision. This isn't "new age." It doesn't fit into any philosophical box. It is the work of a journalist who chooses to report from a new perspective. The book should be read by anybody who wonders, or cares, where we're headed.
